The awful truth was made all the clearer today by the release of this headline news:
Sky news has today released findings from the Harvard School of public health in US and University of Warwick in England: they found that obesity is a significant factor in predicting how long a person will live. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090930/tuk-obesity-significantly-cuts-life-shor-45dbed5.html These findings have been published in the British Medical Journal.
Researchers found that putting on weight in middle age cuts the chance of living a long and healthy life by around 80%.
Obesity was defined as having a body mass index over 30. This brings with it great concern as over half of adults in the UK are overweight or obese.
They also stressed that the most effective way of losing or maintaining a healthy weight is to eat a healthy balanced diet and take regular exercise.
Finding the time to cook a healthy meal and finding time to exercise is becoming more and more difficult in today's busy life. The majority of us do not have time to spare and convenience cooking seems to be our only option and exercise is out of the question with so much more important stuff to do.
However perhaps now is as good a time as any to readjust our thinking and priorities. Working double shifts to keep us in the lifestyles that we favour is perhaps pointless if we will not be healthy long enough to enjoy it into our retirement.
Perhaps instead of putting away for our retirement we should be exercising and eating healthily to make sure we are able enough to enjoy it at all.
